How to Limit the Impact of Mobile Phone Theft: Essential Tips from MyNerd
Mobile phone theft is increasing rapidly across the UK, with criminals often targeting high-end smartphones for resale or fraud. But losing your phone isn’t just about the device—it’s about losing your private data, access to your apps, and potentially your identity. At MyNerd, we’ve put together expert advice to help you protect your phone, secure your data, and know exactly what to do if your mobile is stolen.
🛡️ How to Protect Your Mobile Before It’s Too Late
1. Turn On Device Tracking
Enable tracking features to help locate or erase your phone remotely.
For iPhone Users
Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Find My > Find My iPhone
and enable all options:
✔ Find My iPhone
✔ Find My Network (works even if the phone is off)
✔ Send Last Location
For Android Users
Go to Settings > Google > Find My Device
and turn it on
Enable “Send Last Location” to save the phone’s location before the battery dies
🔍 Note: Android devices currently can’t be tracked when powered off, but Google is working on new offline tracking updates.
2. Use Strong Lock Screen Protection
Choose a strong PIN or passcode
Enable fingerprint or face recognition
Set auto-lock after 30 seconds to 1 minute of inactivity
3. Block Control Access on Lock Screen
Prevent thieves from quickly disabling your tracking.
On iPhone:Settings > Face ID/Touch ID & Passcode > Allow Access When Locked > Disable Control Center
On Android:Settings > Security > Lock Screen Settings > Disable Quick Settings or Control Access
4. Lock Your SIM Card
This prevents thieves from removing your SIM and using it in another device.
iPhone: Settings > Mobile Data > SIM PIN
Android: Settings > Security > Set Up SIM Lock
5. Back Up Regularly
Use iCloud, Google Drive, or another cloud service to back up your data daily. This protects your contacts, messages, photos, and files if your phone is lost or stolen.
🚨 What to Do If Your Phone Is Stolen
Act quickly to limit the damage and protect your data.
1. Report the Theft Immediately
Call your network (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three, etc.) to block the SIM
Report the incident to local police and get a crime reference number
Provide the IMEI number (found on the box or receipt)
2. Use Remote Tracking & Erase Features
If tracking is enabled:
Try to locate your phone via Find My iPhone or Find My Device
If lost for good, lock and wipe it remotely to protect your data
3. Change All Passwords
Update logins for:
Emails
Banking apps
Social media (WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram)
Shopping accounts (Amazon, eBay, etc.)
4. Contact Your Bank & Credit Card Providers
If payment apps or cards are saved on your device, call your bank immediately. They can freeze cards or flag suspicious activity.
5. Check Your Credit Report
Monitor for identity theft. Use UK services like Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion to spot unusual activity early.
6. Let Your Contacts Know
If hackers gain access to your apps, they may send scam messages pretending to be you. Warn your friends and family just in case.
📌 Extra Tips to Avoid Mobile Theft
Don’t use your phone openly in high-risk areas
Keep it zipped in a secure pocket or bag
Watch out for distraction techniques in public
Consider mobile phone insurance that covers theft, accidental damage, and unauthorised use
